Maurice Loach // 'Blonde' & 'Family Home'

As a gay man I’ve always been fascinated by straight men’s fixation upon blondes, from Hitchcock's icy heroines and Marilyn Monroe, to Anna Nicole Smith and Britney Spears. Feminine blonde-ness is often symbiotic with sexuality, so I decided to try to separate the two, by filming my cousins plaiting each others blonde hair in extreme close up, focusing on it’s form and texture and contemplating it’s feminine power.
Having not lived in my parents home for a number of years, I cannot help but find the space they live in incredibly emotive. I hoped to capture me and my mothers sentiments about the house, finding meaning in it’s most empty and worn spaces. However, it seemed incomplete not to include my mother’s identical twin in the narrative and to compare her feelings about her own home.
